As is our tradition, all TOCS students, KG to 6th Grade, are busily creating their interpretations of the Overture to Richard Wagner’s Opera, “Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg”, a romantic comedic opera that takes place in the late Middle Ages. So expect to see lots of castles, knights and ladies, as well as some unexpected visions that the music has produced in your children's’ minds!! We thoroughly enjoy this program and are so grateful to the St Louis Symphony Volunteer Association for giving us, among 100 other schools ,the opportunity to participate in this community-wide project. Our 7 representatives will be determined next week and submitted for the TOP 100 Competition by 1-22. STAY TUNED for an announcement of who will represent TOCS this year!

The Art program will thus become both a “guinea pig” to see how we can incorporate this new technology, and a “learning lab” for the whole school to determine the many potential uses of such a new tool! Stay tuned for more updates as they are experienced!

To ALL who have been able to order products with your children’s art work on them, THANK YOU!!!
AND, a HUGE Thank you to Maureen Eichenlaub and Carol Hanson for coordinating the ATR efforts!!

THANK YOU, ALL ART VOLUNTEERS
The art room/program is so blessed to have a cadre of wonderful parent volunteers who help in the classrooms, hanging art in the hallways, and preparing materials at home. THANKS TO ALL OF YOU ARTSY FOLKS!!

6TH GRADE ART MUSEUM FIELD TRIP
Last Thursday -11/5 - Mr. Neel and I accompanied the 27 students and 7 parents on our Annual trip to the St Louis Art Museum. We had a perfect-weather day, so eating lunch outside was a joy! Students worked on a Scavenger Hunt in small groups both before & after a Docent-led Tour that covered the areas of Egyptian, Ancient Greece & Rome, and Medieval Art. The kids were very well-behaved & seemed to enjoy the Museum, a new destination experience for most of them! We will be following up the trip in the art room with projects making Egyptian Cartouches (see sample above) and Ancient Greek/Roman “Action Figures”
in wire & plaster cloth.

NATIVE AMERICAN ARTS & CRAFTS
The 1st graders & the 5th graders are deep into our Native American units. 1st graders make “leather” out of brown paper bags, then turn the leather into vests and drum coverings, both of which are sponge-printed with bright-colored Indian designs. They also create a patterned necklace from colored noodles and beads.
The 5th graders focus their Native American unit on the craft of yarn weaving, creating a pouch on a cardboard loom. This year, I have asked them to weave colors and textures that represent something “great” and something “awful” from their lives into their pouch, much as God helps us weave all types of experiences into our own Life Tapestries!

AND EVERYONE ELSE...
Just a quick note about other art classes!! KG just completed their “Flat to Fat” paper sculptures, 2nd & 3rd graders have been weaving with paper “lines”, 4th grade has been conducting painting experiments as the basis for a themed collage.
Needless to say, there is always a LOT going on in the Art Room!! YOU are always welcome to visit!
Just this morning at church, someone asked if I had started back to school yet. “Not till Wednesday...” then we went on to compare the start of school to the beginning of Spring: everything is new-AGAIN-and that old tired feeling teachers have by Memorial Day is gone-again-at least for 10 months!

It IS exciting to welcome all you TOCS students and your families to the Art Classes for ‘09-’10!! I am full of anticipation to see what God has in store for us! Our Creative God ALWAYS makes our lives interesting and our efforts in Art CAN give Him all honor and glory!! We intend to SOAR like eagles as we put our HOPE in the LORD!!

SOMETHING NEW: Art Classes are scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, thus maximizing the # of classes possible! (We miss too many Mondays and Fridays!)

SOMETHING OLD: Art Classes will start off with a traditional favorite! ART TO REMEMBER!! Each grade level will study the works of a Famous Artist, then create a piece of art in the artist’s style. You will then decide if your child’s Monet (as in the painting above), Van Gogh, Picasso, Rousseau, Escher, or da Vinci can be applied to one or more objects available for purchase - a mug, a t-shirt, a mouse pad, a sketchbook, and so on. The proceeds from this program will help us complete our goal : purchasing a Smart Board for the Art Room!! (Teaching and learning drawing, etc, will be even MORE FUN!!)
On Back-to-School-Night, make sure you look at the display of items that could have your child’s art on them (they will arrive by the end of Nov. just in time for Christmas gifts!!)

I’m looking forward to working with some of you parents when you sign up (at Back-to-School-Night) to be a VOLUNTEER helper in the KG and 1st Grade art classes OR to be the PARENT COORDINATOR for Art to Remember.
[If you have an older child but would still like to come in and help in their class, sign up on the “GENERAL-ARTSY-HELPERS” page!!]

I hope to meet many of you new parents at Back-to-School-Night and, of course, I will be delighted to meet and welcome both NEW and RETURNING students SOOOON!

[Feel free to “roam around” this website: Tiemeier Studios! Although Don, my husband, and I have made some art for many years, we are becoming more “intentional” about making our efforts more business-like!! If you know anyone who might be interested in our Portrait or Photography or Banner services, please pass the word on!!]
